Text 1

W: Excuse me, is this 1660 Eighth Street?

M: No, it's 6014 Eleventh Street.

Text 2

W: You might catch a cold if you don't wear a hat on such a cold winter day.

M: It doesn't matter. I'm used to it.

Text 3

M: Jim is taller than George, but he is shorter than Tom.

W: And you are taller than Tom.

Text 4

M: Hello, Sue. When are you taking off?

W: Tomorrow morning, from Beijing. The plane takes off at 5:00, and if everything goes well, I'll be at the hotel by 10:00.

M: I can't travel this year because I must finish my work by the end of September.

Text 5

W: Do you eat a big breakfast?

M: No, I just have a glass of milk. What about you?

W: I have a big breakfast. I eat eggs and toast, and I drink milk.

Text 6

M: Can I order take-out here?

W: Yes, sir. What would you like?

M: I want a hamburger, a medium French fries, a Big Mac meal, and a double cheeseburger, please.

W: Anything else?

M: And a 6-piece chicken nuggets.

W: What kind of drink would you like?

M: A large Coke with extra ice and a milkshake. And please give me several more straws. How much do I owe you?

W: Let me calculate it, er... that comes to $ 14.30.

M: Here's $15. Keep the change.

Text 7

M: Welcome back! I didn't see you in math class on Friday.

W: I wasn't here on Friday. My class went on a field trip to look at some of the different rock formations here in California. Our last stop was Death Valley. In fact, we camped there last night.

M: Death Valley! But that's a desert. Wasn’t it much too hot for camping?

W: No, not really. It gets hot during the day, but it cools off very quickly at night.

M: Well, did you enjoy the trip?

W: Yes, very much. The desert is nicer than you think. You really should go and see it sometime.

Text 8

M: Hi, Lily. Where were you at lunchtime? I was looking for you in the dining hall.

W: Oh, sorry, I missed you. My English class ran late again.

M: That's been happening quite often recently. Maybe it's because the final exams are coming up.

W: Yes. After class, there is always a group of students hanging around the professor asking questions. How about you? Are yon ready for the exams?

M: I've been studying a lot recently, but my math problems are really giving me a big headache.

W: Don't worry, Tom. There's still one month to go before the exam. You have enough time to work them out.

M: Well, I don't need to spend much time on other subjects. I can pay more attention to my weak subjects.

Text 9

W: Hey, I'm a little bit upset about that television you people sold me. I got it home and the thing doesn't work! The lines.., the… there're lines all over the picture! I'm just not satisfied. I’d like to have my money back, or give me a new television.

M: Well, it's not my fault! What did you do with it when you got it home?

W: I just plugged it in and turned it on.

M: Well, it was working fine when you took it... when you left here.

W: Well, I think the least you people can do is to come over and adjust it for me, and make sure the thing's working all right.

M: Well, I wouldn't mind doing that. Or you could bring it here and I'll have a look at it. But you bought a second-hand TV and there's only a... two-day warranty on it.

W: Second-hand? Second-hand?! That thing was supposed to be new! Your salesman told me it was brand new.

M: Well, I can't be responsible for that.

Text 10

We usually say that people have five senses. Senses are how we learn what is happening around us. The five main senses are sight, hearing, touch, taste, and smell.

Each sense depends on a certain part of the body. This part of the body receives information and then this information is sent to the brain. For example, we use our eyes to see the things around us. We hear sounds with our ears. In other words, eyes control sight and ears control hearing. Skin controls touch. Taste is controlled by the tongue, while smell is controlled by the nose. In addition, there are also other senses which are as important as these five sends. There is a sense of balance which stops us from falling down. We also have senses of hunger, thirst, and cold.
