Chinese New Year

Chinese New Year is the most important festivity for the Chinese people. Itis also called the Spring Festival or the Lunar New Year.

Every year has an animal’s name. These animals are the rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, ram, monkey, rooster, dog and pig. A Chineselegend says that these twelve animals had a race. The first year was named afterthe rat, the winner. The other eleven years were named after the order in whichthe animals arrived in the race. The clever rat jumped onto the ox’s back thenat the end jumped over the ox’s head to arrive first!

The Chinese believe that a person born in a particular year has some of thecharacteristics of animal.

On Chinese New Year’s Eve all family members enjoy a big, delicious is very important for the Chinese to be with their families on this is always part of the dinner because it represents abundance.

Dear Judges and Friends,

The topic for my speech today is “Festival.” I would like to talk about myfavorite festival, the Mid-Autumn Festival.

In China we have several important festivals, such as the Spring Festival, the Lantern Festival, the Dragon-boat Festival and the Mid-Autumn g them, I like Mid-Autumn festival best, especially because I live inXiamen.

In Xiamen, when we celebrate the Mid-Autumn festival, we do not only followthe common practices such as having a big dinner party with our family, eatingmooncakes, and appreciating the full moon at night, we also have one uniquecustom which is only practiced in Xiamen, that is “Bo Bing”.

“Bo Bing” is a very interesting game that almost all Xiamen people playduring this festival. Usually family members or close friends get togetheraround a table with a big round bowl in the middle and six dices in the bowl. Wetake turns to throw the dices into the bowl. We will get different prizesaccroding to the different ways the dices show their upper sides. Everyone islikely to become the champion or “Zhuangyuan” for the year. There is an elementof luck and equal opportunity in this game. So people usually get excited whileplaying. Also, the game gives very pleasant sounds. The tinkling made by thedices falling into the bowl is pleasant, people’s laughing, cheering andapplauding for the big prizes they’ve won is pleasant. All this adds greatly tothe joyful atmosphere of this festival. As a kid, of course I also like thematerial prizes I get from the game, such as a candy or a cake.

In this year’s Mid-Autumn Festival, my family invited our foreign friendsto come to our home to celebrate the Festival together. They have two childrenwho are younger than me. While our parents were making Jiaozi together, we kidsplayed “Bo Bing”. We bought quite some gifts to share with our guests as enjoyed the game and our get-together very much.

The literal translation of “Bo Bing” is “mooncake gambling.” But actuallyit is not gambling, at least our family never plays it that way. For us, it ismore an occasion of happy sharing and getting-together. This is why Xiamen’sMid-Autumn Festival has become my favorite festival in the year.

Thank you very much!

Ladies and Gentlemen,

It is always an exciting day in New Year Eve as the majority of people inthe world are in very good mood of celebrating New Year. There are numerous NewYear parties around the globe where many children are re-united with theirfamilies, young couples are together with their newborns, grandparents aretaking their opportunities to spend some quality time with their own children aswell as grandchildren. And the list goes on and on.

Just what exactly is New Year Eve? In my own view, I think there are twosets of meaning.

First, New Year Eve represents hope and a new start of the year. Hope isimportant to mankind. The symbolic meaning encourages us to put all our bad luckbehind us as we look forward to a fresh start from the first day of theyear.

Second, New Year Eve represents bonding between mankind. This important daygrants all of us a chance to stay close to someone we love dearly. As we spendtime with them, perhaps, we ask them how they are doing lately, or we find otherways to show someones how much we care for them.

What else do we get out of New Year Eve? Joy is the feel good factor. Itmeans we enjoy being with someone. And joy is something that money can not buyin this world.

Thank you very much.
