A friend of mine was giving an English lesson to a class of adult who hadrecently come to live in the United States. After placing quite a number ofeveryday objects on a table, he asked various members of the class to give himthe ruler, the book, the pen and so on. The class went very smoothly and thestudents seemed interested and serious about the work that they were engaged inuntil when my friend turned to an Italian student

and said, "Give me the kays." The man looked surprised and somewhat at aloss. Seeing this, my friend thought that the student hadn't heard him clearly,so he repeated. "Give me the kays." The Italian shrugged his shoulders. Then, hethrew his arms around the teacher's neck and kissed him on both cheeks.

Bananas for Lunch

A fat monkey likes eating bananas very much. He had bananas for lunch. Hepeeled one and ate one more and then, one more one banana, two bananas, threebananas, four… He ate and ate, but he wanted more, he peeled and he ate, peeledand he ate, five bananas, six bananas, seven bananas, eight … He peeled two moreand continued two more. He ate whole bunch of bananas and can’t sleep.

Once there were two mice. They were friends. One mouse lived in thecountry; the other mouse lived in the city. After many years the Country mousesaw the City mouse; he said, “Do come and see me at my house in the country.” Sothe City mouse went. The City mouse said, “This food is not good, and your houseis not good. Why do you live in a hole in the field? You should come and live inthe city. You would live in a nice house made of stone. You would have nice foodto eat. You must come and see me at my house in the city.”

The Country mouse went to the house of the City mouse. It was a very goodhouse. Nice food was set ready for them to eat. But just as they began to eatthey heard a great noise. The City mouse cried, “ Run! Run! The cat is coming!”They ran away quickly and hid.

After some time they came out. When they came out, the Country mouse said,“I do not like living in the city. I like living in my hole in the field. For itis nicer to be poor and happy, than to be rich and afraid.”

The Wind And The Sun

One day the wind said to the sun, “Look at that man walking along the road.I can get his cloak off more quickly than you can.” “We will see about that,”said the sun. “I will let you try first.” So the wind tried to make the man takeoff his cloak. He blew and blew, but the man only pulled his cloak more closelyaround himself. “I give up,” said the wind at last. “I cannot get his cloakoff.” Then the sun tried. He shone as hard as he could. The man soon became hotand took off his cloak.

【譯文】

風和太陽  有一天風跟太陽說: “看看那個沿着路上走的人.我可以比你快讓他把披風脫下來. “我們等着看吧,”太陽說, “我讓你先試.因此風嘗試讓那個人把披風脫下來.他用力地吹,可是那個人把披風拉得更緊.“我放棄了,”風最後說,“我無法讓他把披風脫下來.”然後由太陽試試看.他儘可能地曬他.不久,那個人很熱就把披風脫下來了.

披着羊皮的狼

A Wolf in sheep's clothing  A wolf wanted to eat the sheep, but he wasafraid of the vigilant shepherd and his dogs. One day the wolf found the skin ofa sheep. He put it on and walked among the sheep. A lamb thought that the wolfwas its mother because his skin looked like hers. So it followed the wolf. Soonafter they had left the dogs, the wolf came at the lamb and ate it up. For sometime he succeeded in deceiving the sheep, and enjoying hearty meals.

【譯文】

披着羊皮的狼  狼想吃羊,但是他害怕警惕的牧羊人和牧羊犬。 有一天狼發現了一塊羊皮,便披着它混入羊羣。一隻小羊羔把這隻披着羊皮的狼誤認爲自己的媽媽,被領出了羊羣。 狼成功地欺騙了羊羣,吃掉了小羊羔。

寓意:事物的外表有時候會掩蓋它的本質,所以我們不能只憑表面現象就作判斷。

一天,一隻猴子在河邊騎車.這時他看見樹下有一隻獅子,獅子向他跑來.他非常的害怕,掉進河裏.他不會游泳,大叫起來.兔子聽見了,跳進水裏,但他卻沒有辦法救猴子.幸運的是,一隻大象過來了.大象非常強壯,救出了兔子和猴子.他們來到大象的家,在那裏吃了一頓大餐.從此他們成了好朋友.

A Good Boy

Little Robert asked his mother for two cents."What did you do with themoney I gave you yesterday?"

"I gave it to a poor old woman," he answered.

"You"re a good boy," said the mother proudly."Here are two cents hy are you so interested in the old woman?"

"She is the one who sells the candy."

The Chinese people call flattery to someone's face "presenting a tall hat"to someone.

In the past, an official in the imperial1 court in Beijing was appointed toan official post outside the capital. Before departure, he went to his teacher'shome to bid farewell. His teacher warned him: "It is not easy to be an officialoutside the capital. You should be prudent2 and careful."

The official replied: "Please don't worry. I have prepared 100 'tallhats',and will present one to each and every person I meet. I'm sure all thelocal people will be pleased."

The teacher said reproachingly3: "We are all honest gentlemen. How can youdo that?"

The official pretended he had no way out and said: "Very few people underheaven are like you who dislike being flattered4 or presented with tallhats."  Hearing this, the teacher was very much pleased. He nodded and said:"What you said is true, too."

After the official said farewell to his teacher and went out, he said tohis friend: "Of my 100 'tall hats', now only 99 are left."

在古代,有一個在京城朝廷裏做官的人,奉命去外地做官。臨行前,他去老師家告別。老師叮囑說:“外地的官不容易做,應當謹慎小心些纔好。”  那個做官的人回答說:“請老師放心,我準備了一百頂高帽子,逢人便送他一頂,管叫地方上人人高興。”  老師生氣地說:“我們都是正人君子,怎麼可以這樣做呢?”  那個做官的人裝着無可奈何的.樣子說:“天下不喜歡戴高帽子的人實在太少了啊!像老師您這樣的又能有幾個呢!”  老師聽了很高興,點點頭說:“你講的也不錯!”  那個做官的人告別老師出來後,對朋友說:“我的一百頂高帽子,現在只剩下九十九頂了!”
