Good aftemoon, everyone !

The topic of my speech today is " Being a Good Listener". Good listeningcan always show

respect, promote understanding, and improve interpersonal relationship.

Many people suggest that parents should listen more to their children, sothey will understand

them better, and find it easy to narrow the generation gap; teachers shouldlisten more to their

students, then they can meet their needs better, and place themselves in agood relationship with their

students; students should listen more to their classmates, thus they willhelp and learn from each

other, and a friendship is likely to be formed.

What I want to stress is that each of us should listen more to others. Showyour respect and never

stop others till they finish their talk. Show you are interested by asuppmtive silence or a knowing

smile. Be open-minded to different opinions even though you don't a word, good

listening can really enable us to get closer to each other.

Thank you for your listening!

What makes a teacher?

It is customary for adults to forget how hard and dull and long school learning by memory of all the basic things one must know is a mostincredible and unending effort.

Learning to read is probably the most difficult and revolutionary thingthat happens to the human brain and if you don't believe that, watch anilliterate adult try to do it.

School is not easy and it is not for the most part very much fun, butthen,if you are very lucky, you may find a real teacher. Three real teachers in alifetime is the very best of my luck. My first was a science and math teacher inhigh school, my second , a professor of creative writing at Stanford , and mythird was my friend and partner, Ed Ricketts.

I have come to believe that a great teacher is a great artist and thatthere are as few as there are any other great artists. It might even be thegreatest of the arts since the medium is the human mind and spirit.

My three had these things in common:they all loved what they were did not tell, they catalyzed a burning desire to know. Under theirinfluence, the horizons sprung wide and fear went away and unknown becameknowledge. But most important of all ,the truth, that dangerous stuff, becamebeautiful and precious.

I shall speak only of my first teacher because in addition to the otherthings, she brought discovery.

She aroused us to shouting,book-waving discussion. She had the noisiestclass in school and she didn't even seem to know it . We could never stick tothe subject. Our speculation ranged the world.

She breathed curiosity into us so that we brought in facts or truthsshielded in our hands like captured fireflies.

She was fired and perhaps rightly so, for failing to teach things must be learned. But she left a passion in us for the pure knowableworld and she inflamed me with a curiosity which has never left . I could not dosimple arithmetic but through her I sensed that abstract mathematics was verymuch like music. When she was relieved, a sadness came over us but the light didnot go out.
