On the site of the 9/11 tragedy, Irish university professor Elizabeth Stinger Keefe found an image of hope— a wedding photo of a happy couple and their friends lay among the rubble(瓦礫) of the Twin Towers. As a gesture of goodwill, she decided to try and reunite the picture with either its owner or a relative.

Every year, on the anniversary of the terrorist attacks, she would make an attempt, posting the picture on social media and asking others to share it. Finally, after a remarkable 13 years, her work paid off. Thanks to the power of social media, her appeal was more widely shared than ever before.

A man named Fred Mahe called Ms Keefe after the image went viral — to tell her that he was in fact in the picture and that all six people photographed were alive and well. He said that the image belonged to him and had been lost in the rubble after 9/ photo was originally taken at a friend’s wedding in Colorado, earlier in 2001. Mahe said, “The picture was at my desk in the world Trade Center, Tower Two, on the 77th floor. I never thought it could have been kept safe by Keefe for the last 13 years.”

Mahe said that he was in touch with Keefe over the phone and described the conversation as “dedication and persistence” to continue to seek the owner of the photo. “She kept my photo safe for 13 years in her favorite Ernest Hemingway book, A Moveable Feast.” Mahe said he wasn’t yet at work as the attacks began on 9/11, and, “thankfully never got a chance to go up to my office.”

And Mahe’s wife has even invited Keefe to Thanksgiving dinner. Now the pair have reconnected with a piece of their past as Keefe has finally returned the picture to its rightful owner and has made a new friend in the process.

21. Why did Keefe want to keep the picture she found?

Adult coloring books have been in circulation for a few years now, and actually the first adult coloring book was published in 1960, however, during the past year they’ve really taken the world by storm.

Many adults can benefit and enjoy these popular coloring books, particularly today’s busy parents. Here are some fun and calming reasons you might want to purchase one or two of your own.

As parents, we tend to get caught up in the daily routine of getting our families hurriedly out the door for school and work each day—only to fall into bed exhausted and then get up and do it all over again the next day. We may not have much time to devote to a hobby, but if you grab yourself an adult coloring book, you can get your creative juices flowing in a matter of minutes.

Parenting is wonderful but it's also full of daily stress that naturally go along with the job. Whether it be at the end of a busy day or you have a few free minutes while the baby naps, picking up a box of freshly, sharpened colored pencils and your favorite coloring book can take your mind off your "to do" list and transport you to a whole other world—one where you can be free to just enjoy the rainbow and simply embrace a little unwinding time.

Whether you choose to delight in colored pencils or an old-fashioned box of crayons, all you’ll need to grab is either one and your favorite coloring book. So if you’re in the car while your son’s finishing up soccer practice, or in the reception area waiting to have your teeth cleaned, your coloring supplies are a breeze to take along and help you pass the time in a colorful way.

Another benefit to taking up coloring is that it can also become a family affair. Sitting together with your kids and coloring is a great way to spend some quality time together, regardless of whether or not you stay within the lines!

25. These popular coloring books ________.

D. you can feel comfortable by embracing wind

A. It is convenient for people to carry the coloring supplies.

While shopping for my groceries a few years ago, I decided on an idea to buy one of those little potted basil plants instead of the package of basil leaves. It was about the same price and I figured I would plant it in my yard and maybe get a few meals worth out of it before it died.

Little did I know that the little $4 basil plant would survive for almost 3 years and provide enough fresh basil for at least 2-3 meals per month (that's about 60 basil-filled meals)!

What I learned was that the plant likes quite a bit of sun and warm temperatures (it went nearly into rest in the winter when temperatures in Arizona drop to below zero overnight). My husband and I had enjoyed so many meals with fresh basil that after the original one died, we immediately got another basil plant to replace it.

If you like to cook, you know that basil fresh off the plant transforms a good meal into an amazing one.

To make the case for always keeping a basil plant in our yard even stronger, I just opened the latest issue of All You magazine and saw this picture of a beautiful basil plant. Then I read the first sentence of the accompanying article, “Did you know a basil plant can produce nearly $80 worth of leaves each year?”

I knew that I had gotten my money’s worth from the little plant, but I had no idea that I saved about $200 in the time I had that plant. $4 to produce $200? That’s a great return on investment no matter how you slice it!

Whether you buy your live herbs as seeds or plants, and plant them in coffee cans or your front yard, growing herbs can be a great way to save money and enjoy even better-tasting meals. Try it for yourself and see how much you can enjoy fresh herbs in your meals.

29. We know from the text that Basil ________.

A. will survive for more than 3 years B. must be planted in your front yard

C. can produce $80 worth per month D. can become meals after being planted

30. The following can be used to describe the author except ____________.

31. Which one is NOT the author’s attitude towards planting basil?

A. It deserves your investment. B. It’s a good way to save $200 each year.

C. It can give you a big surprise. D. It can make you enjoy fresh meals.

D

The sounds you make while chewing have a significant effect on the amount of food you eat, a new study has found. The results suggest that people are likely to consume less if they can hear themselves eating.

Researchers at Brigham Young University and Colorado State University have found that your TV, radio, and computer are making you fat. Not by bombarding(炮轟) you with food ads (though they totally are) but by blocking the sounds of your chewing. In a recent study, they found that the noise your food makes while you’re eating can have a significant effect on how much food you eat. “Sound is typically labeled as the forgotten food sense,” adds Ryan Elder, assistant professor of marketing at BYU’s Marriott School of Management. “But if people are more focused on the sound the food makes, it could reduce consumption.” “For the most part, consumers and researchers have overlooked food sound as an important sensory cue(暗示) in the eating experience.” said study coauthor Gina Mohr, an assistant professor of marketing at CSU.

The team carried out three separate experiments to quantify the effects of “food sound salience” on quantity of food consumed during a meal. In one experiment, participants were given snacks to eat while they wore headphones playing either loud or quiet noises. The ones loud enough to mask the sound of chewing made subjects eat more — 4 pretzels(椒鹽捲餅) compared to 2.75 pretzels for the “quiet” group. In another of their experiments they found that just having people hear chewing sounds through an advertisement can decrease the amount they eat.

Elder and Morh call this the “Crunch Effect.” The main takeaway of their work should be the idea of mindfulness, they said. Being more mindful of not just the taste and physical appearance of food, but also of the sound it makes can help consumers to eat less.“When you mask the sound of consumption, like when you watch TV while eating, you take away one of those senses and it may cause you to eat more than you would normally,” Elder said.

“The effects may not seem huge —one less pretzel— but over the course of a week, month, or year, it could really add up.” So next time you sit down for a meal, take your headphones off and mute the TV or find a movie where there’s a lot of very audible chewing.

32. When people hear themselves eating, they can ________.

A. be likely to eat less B. be happy to take in food

C. enjoy the sound of it D. consume more food

33. We can conclude from Paragraph 2 that ________.

A. your TV, radio, and computer are making you fat by giving you food ads.

B. what you eat can have a slight effect on how much food you eat.

C. if people are less focused on the sound the food makes, it could reduce consumption.

D. researchers should treat food sound as an important sensory cue in the eating experience

34. What can we know from the experiments?

A. Participants were given snacks to eat while they wore headphones playing the same noises.

B. An advertisement can decrease the amount they eat without having people hear chewing sounds.

C. The team carried out two separate experiments to quantify the effects of “food sound salience”.

D. Over many days, the effects of losing weight can add up although it may not seem huge now.

35. Where can we most probably find this passage?

A. An advertisement. B. A science magazine.

C. A notice board. D. A medical journal.

How To Break 5 Bad Financial Habits

Everyone has a bad financial habit. We live in a country that spends billions on advertising to make us want to make purchases; 36 . Remember: even though the habits are hard to break and require great effort, there is payoff.

1. Pay bills when you receive them. Think of all the stress and anxiety that you experience when you put off paying your bills. When you receive the email notice or open the bill in the mail, take care of it. It will only take five minutes, and you won't be flooded with bills at the last minute.

2. 37 . You must have had a hard time controlling the amount of purchases you are making. Minimize this urge by using your ATM card once a week to withdraw the amount of money for the week. Keep your cards at home, and even put your credit cards in a hard to reach place in your closet to keep you from using them.

3. Buy only what you really need. Most of us take shopping trips to buy items we really don't really need. Some claim shopping eases their tension, gets their mind off other things, or gives them much happiness. 38 . Try to replace shopping with some hobbies like riding your bike or taking a walk with friends.

4. Track your expenses. Sometimes restaurants and businesses will charge you the wrong amount, but you won't have the receipt to back up your claim. Other times, you might have inadequate funds for the check you just wrote. Keep your receipts, and spend a few minutes every night to double check your charges, and know the current balance of your bank account. 39 .

5. Check your credit score annually. 40 . If you do notice something wrong, you can send in correction letters, so your applications for credit cards, car loans, or a mortgage(房屋貸款) are approved.

A. Take the time to figure out what makes you buy unnecessary items.

B. Change how you spend your money.

C. It beats getting overcharged or having to pay an overdraft(透支) fee.

D. So if you’re the reason your money never seems to stick around, here are some strategies to help break five bad financial habits.

E. Use cash and not your card.

F. Get in the habit of checking your credit score to make sure there are no errors or inaccuracies.

G. However, if you are looking to make change and break your bad financial habits , use these tips.

One possible version:

Recently the illegal vaccine cases in Shandong Province have concerned billions of people in China. It is obvious that the vaccine dealers’ endless pursuit of wealth at the cost of public health and honesty is to blame for it. This reminds me of the proverb: Honesty is the best policy.

Never can we attach enough importance to honesty. If you are honest all the time, you’ll be trusted and respected by others. A liar is always looked down upon and regarded as a black sheep by the people around. Once you lie, people will never believe you even if you speak the truth.

It is needless to say that honesty is essentially important to us students. What we do should agree with what we say. When sitting an examination, we should finish the papers on our own without reference to others’. In addition, our homework should be completed independently. Dishonesty may bring benefits in the short run, but honesty will promise a bright future in the long term.
