The hungry children gathered eagerly around the basket, and quarreled for the bread, because each wished to have the largest loaf. At last they went away without even thanking the good gentleman.

A man may usually be known by the books he reads as well as by the company he keeps. One should always live in the best company, whether it be of books or of men.

A good book may be among the best of friends. It will never change. It is the most patient and cheerful of companions. It does not turn its back upon us in times of trouble or pain. It always receives us with the same kindness, amusing and instructing us in youth, and comforting us in age.

Books possess the fundamental features of immortality(不朽). They are by far the most lasting products of human effort. Temples and statues decline, but books survive. Time is of no account with great thought, which are as fresh today as when they first passed through their author’s minds ages ago. The only effect of time has been to clean out the bad products; for nothing in literature can long survive but what is really good.

Books introduce us into the best society: they bring us into the presence of the greatest minds that have ever lived. We hear what they said and did: we see them as if they were really alive; we sympathize with them, enjoy with them, their experience becomes ours, and we feel as if we were actors with them in the scenes which they describe.

The great and good do not die even in this world. Living in books, their spirits walk abroad. The book is a living voice, to which one still listens. Hence we ever remain under the influence of the great men of old.

D

Imagine this scene: it’s blowing hard outside, you’re leaning comfortably on the sofa under a warm blanket, chatting with your closest friends.

That feeling has a name in Danish---‘hygge’. And, as Denmark recently won the title of ‘happiest country in the world’, the rest of the world is becoming more and more interested in finding ways to share this concept.

‘Hygge’—originally from a Norwegian word meaning ‘happiness’—doesn’t have an exact word in English. It’s often translated as cosiness, or as blogger Anna West told the BBC, “cosiness of the soul.” But, as translator ToveMaren Stakkestad explains: “Hygge was never meant to be translated. It was meant to be felt.”

Actually, Hygge involves creating a warm, cosy atmosphere and enjoying it with your loved ones. Danish winters are long and dark and so achieving ‘hygge’ is particularly relevant during this season. A typical ‘hygge’ activity during winter could be, enjoying delicious homemade food and light-hearted conversation with friends--- preferably in the warm glow of candlelight; or maybe sipping a glass of wine after a day spent skiing. However, Hygge isn’t only confined to the cold winter months—it can also describe that warm, vague feeling you get after a walk through a forest with friends on summer’s day or a family barbecue in the park.

The concept of ‘hygge’ is currently taking the world by storm with more and more people becoming crazy about achieving a state of happiness. Articles, books and stocking gifts, full of tips on the achieve hygge, are hitting the market. Although, some believe this has become a marketing and advertising method, the benefits of staying happy cannot be thought poorly of. So, as the winter nights draw in, instead of hibernating, get into your favourite sweater, bake some cookies and sit by a roaring fire with a good book. And if you can do this with friends and family, even better—hygge is meant to be shared.

32. Why is the word ‘hygge’ difficult to translate into English?

A. It is originally from a Norwegian word.

B. It is a feeling and a part of Danish culture

C. It contains mysterious code in the concept

D. It lacks proper atmosphere in English world.

33. Why has the rest of the world become interested in ‘hygge’?

A. They want to gain the same lifestyle

B. They want to earn money from marketing

C. They are anxious to get something for nothing

D. They are willing to share their life with friends.

34. What can we learn about ‘hygge’ from the text?

A. It is only a lifestyle in the long winter moths

B. It means just the comfortable physical environment.

C. It largely makes the ordinary special or meaningful

D. It can only be experienced in the company of other people.

35. What may be the best title of the text?
