讀《傲慢與偏見》學翻譯系列13

《傲慢與偏見》內容簡介：
小說講述了Bennet一家五位千金的婚姻與愛情，表達了婚姻必須建立在愛情和經濟兩個基礎上的婚姻觀。傲慢而深情的達西先生成爲小說塑造的一個經典形象。簡奧斯丁的語言簡練而幽默，反覆品味，趣味無窮。

反譯：聞名不如見面。

上面這句話大家會怎樣翻譯呢？其實在《傲慢與偏見》中有一個句子很好地表達了這個說法。

翻譯例句：
Mr. Collins……said he had heard much of their beauty, but that, in this instance, fame had fallen short of the truth. (Chapter 13)
柯林斯先生……說他早就聽聞班納特家的女孩子美貌出衆，但是現在才知道，聞名不如見面。

翻譯要點：
原句中有一個表達法：fame has fallen short of the truth，正好與中文中“聞名不如見面、百聞不如一見”的意思相對應。這裏的short有“缺乏，不足”的意思，fall short of是一個詞組，表示“達不到、辜負”的含義。

英譯漢例句：

This quater's sales have fallen short of previous expectations.
本季度的銷售量沒有達到預期。

漢譯英應用：

1.宣傳工作總是雷聲大雨點小， 沒什麼實效。
The campaign hasn't made much difference: the outcome has fallen short of the hopes.

口語tips：short這個詞在口語中也經常用到，例如：我還差兩塊錢。I‘m two bucks short. 在這裏short就是“短缺，缺少”的用法。
