一、作"留下"、"丟下"、"落下",常表示某物落在/忘在某地。

如:

You'd better leave your address and telephone number.

你最好留下你的地址和電話號碼。 Bettertakeoffyourshoesandleavethemoutside.

最好把鞋脫掉,放在外面。

I left my key in the readingroom.

我把鑰匙忘在閱覽室了。

二、 表示"留給"、"交給",一般與介詞with或to搭配。如:

Leave it with / to me and I'll see what I can do.

把它交給我,我就知道該怎麼辦。

He has left a number of books with / to me.

他把好些書都存在我這兒/留給了我。

We didn't find him and left word (或a message) with his neighbours. ??我們沒找到他,於是就託他的鄰居留了個條。(不用to,因爲便條還要交給別人) ??

注意: leave sth with sb, 表示"暫存",以後還要取回。leave sth to sb, 表示以後不再索還。

三、 leave作使役動詞,表示"使/ 讓……保持某種狀態"。
