COM port即COM接口，是指Component Object Mode接口，是微軟定義的標準接口。是一種串行通訊端口。COM口的接口標準規範和總線標準規範是RS-232，有時候也叫做RS-232口。
電腦上的COM口多爲9針，最大速率115200bps。通常用於連接鼠標(串口)及通訊設備(如連接外置式MODEM進行數據通訊)等。但目前主流的主板一般都只帶1個串口，甚至不帶，慢慢會被USB 取代。以前用於連接老式的COM口鼠標鍵盤，還有鏈接路由器，外置調制解調器等。現在很少使用。
現在的PC機一般有兩個串行口COM 1和COM 2。串行口不同於並行口之處在於它的數據和控制信息是一位接一位地傳送出去的。雖然這樣速度會慢一些，但傳送距離較並行口更長，因此若要進行較長距離的通信時，應使用串行口。通常COM 1使用的是9針D形連接器，也稱之爲RS-232接口，而COM 2有的使用的是老式的DB25針連接器，也稱之爲RS-422接口，這種接口目前已經很少使用。
串口通信是串行通信的一種方式，包括RS232標準的通信，RS485標準的通信等等。串行通信是一種相對於並行通信的通信方式，這種通信方式傳輸數據是串行輸出的，即只有一個輸出針腳，如USB通信，現在的串行硬盤通信和串口通信等，而並行通信可以同時傳輸多位，如8位並行通信、16位並行通信等，如計算機CPU數據總線，控制總線等等都是同時傳送多位(現在大部分是32位，也有了64位)，接到總線上的集成芯片等元器件與CPU都是並行通信。
RS232是一種接口標準，符合這種標準的接口都是RS232接口，包括9針的和25針的。
COM口是一種符合RS232標準的通信接口，一般計算機上都包括至少一個COM口，可以在設備管理器中找到，老一點的機子可能包含一個COM1口，新一點的機子一般都包含兩個COM口，即COM1口和COM2口(都是9針的)，因爲COM口的使用越來越少，所以COM2口一般沒有接到機箱後面，如果使用可能需要從主板上插針引出使用。
