Notify = not-（知道）+ -ify（使，動詞詞尾），即通知、使知道，引申詞義爲“通知、通告”。同近義詞有inform。Inform指傳達事實或信息，或指經過研究或調查而獲得的事實或信息。而Notify指正式通知需要注意的事情。
Notify常用表達有notify sb (of sth)，notify sth to sb，意爲“to formally or officially tell sb about sth”，即（正式）通報、通知（某人某事）。比如Please notify us if the information is not correct如信息不正確，請通知我們；notify her to draw up a contract通知她草擬一份合同。
