美國習慣用語-第137講:skin-deep/that really gets under my skin

今天我們要給大家講的兩個習慣用語都是和皮膚，也就是英文裏的skin有關。由於皮膚是在外表又很薄，所以美國人有這麼一種說法：skin-deep。

Deep就是深淺的深。Skin-deep從字面來解釋就是：像皮膚那樣深，實際上也就是中文裏說的"膚淺"。當一個人感情不真實，或者一件事並不像它表面上看起來的那樣，人們往往會用skin-deep這個常用語來形容它。我們來舉個例子：

例句-1:"Joe likes to brag about all the friends he has. But to tell the truth, his friendships are only skin-deep -- the only person he really cares about deep down in his heart is himself."

這句話的意思是："喬伊老是喜歡吹噓他有好多朋友。但是，說實話，他和這些朋友的友情都很膚淺。他心目裏真正關心的一個人就是他自己。"

像這種只關心自己，不真心關心朋友的人不僅在美國有,在哪兒都能碰到。一般來說,美國人是很熱情,以助人爲樂的。

美國人有一句老話,那就是：beauty is only skin-deep。

Beauty就是美麗的意思。Beauty is only skin-deep，這個說法的意思就是：美貌只是表面現象。換句話也就是說，外表的美貌並不能說明這個人的本質。下面這個例句就說明了這一點：

例句-2:"Sure, Mrs. Brown is the best-looking woman in town. But you know what they say: beauty is only skin-deep. Underneath, she's about as mean and sti ngy as anybody can be."

這個人說："當然羅，布朗太太是當地最漂亮的一個女人。但是，你知道大家都在說：美貌只是表面現象。實際上，她比誰都刻薄和小氣。"

下面我們要講的一個習慣用語也是和skin這個字有關的，而且也很生動：that really gets under one's skin。

Really是確實的意思，under the skin按字面解釋是在皮膚下面的意思。但是，這種現象似乎是不現實的。我們現在講的是俗語，that really gets under one's skin作爲俗語，它的意思就是一個人感到很煩燥和厭煩。實際上和皮膚沒有什麼關係，而用在描寫情緒的時候更多一些。現在，我們先來給大家舉個例子，這是一個老師在說他的學生：

下面我們再來給大家舉個例子。這是一個辦公室的工作人員在說他的同事：

例句-4:"Jack is a nice guy but he has one habit that really gets under my skin: he sits there all day and cracks his knuckles. You know, I think he doesn't even realize he's doing it."

把手關節弄出嘎嘎的聲音倒還不是常見的習慣。但是，美國人在舉止方面確實有不少忌違的地方。比如，他們認爲一個人要是坐在那裏不斷把腿或腳抖動是不禮貌的。另外還有吃飽了飯大聲打嗝兒，當衆擤鼻子，剔牙齒等。大聲清嗓子也不是很禮貌的行爲，有時在跟別人說話時不得不清一下嗓子的時候，美國人一般都要說一聲對不起。在這方面，每個國家和民族都有不同的風俗習慣

我們今天講了兩個和skin這個字有關的習慣用語，它們是：skin-deep和that really gets under my skin。
