口語課堂第175期:他酒量大得很

大家好，歡迎來到《可可口語課堂》。好朋友在一起聚會，Robert在每次聚會中人氣都特別高，於是在喝酒的時候，大家想作弄他一番，想把他給灌醉，熟悉他的人說：
Want to drink him under the table? Well…you can never do, He's got a hollow leg, you know.
Under the table聽起來像是“在桌子的底下”的意思。Under the table表示“在桌子底下”。比如：One of the dice has rolled under the table. 有一粒骰子滾到桌子下面去了。
Want to drink him under the table?
Drink在這兒是指“喝酒”，喝酒爲什麼要到桌子底下呢？其實這是您的誤解。Under the table在這兒是指“醉倒，酩酊大醉，喝趴下”。我們可以理解爲喝醉的人總是倒在了桌下了。
《唐頓莊園》裏有個場景是老伯爵夫人發現伯爵不見了，以爲他去喝酒了。說道: He'd be under the table by now. 他現在大概已經醉了。
所以"Want to drink him under the table?"並不是指想在桌子下喝酒，而是“你想把他灌醉麼？”
再來聽兩兩個例句：
I knew they wanted to drink me under the table, But I stickedto my limits.我知道他們想把我給灌醉了,可是我就是不喝過量的酒。
這裏stick to意思是“堅持”，limit 限制，限度。在這個場景中，說話人說stickedto my limits是指他喝酒不喝過量。
You'll be under the table if you drink all that wine.
如果你把那些酒都喝了，你會醉的。
Under the table基本意思是“在桌子下”，在口語中可以表示“喝醉，喝趴下”，還有意思則是“私底下，祕密的”，出自於桌牌遊戲，因爲一些賭徒爲了換牌作弊，常將雙手放在桌子下面。所以呢under the table到後來還衍生出了“私底下，祕密地”的意思。
She gave money under the table to get the position.
她私自出錢賄賂以取得那個職位。
If I do any overtime, can you pay me under the table so I won’t have pay tax on it.
如果我加班，你能私下給我付工資嗎，這樣我就不用交稅了。
We did everything above board, never under the table.

在上一小節中我們學習了under the table的意思，一是“在桌子底下”，二是“喝醉”，三是“私底下，祕密的”。這一小節來理解整句話的後半部分。在此之前必須學會的一個短語是hollow leg.
Hollow adj. 空的；中空的 記法：諧音“好漏”-中空的管子好漏水。
Hollow leg字面意思是“一條中空的腿”，比喻人很會喝酒（或者食量大），就像酒都喝到腿裏去了，已經會喝酒喝到都看不出他在喝酒了，能夠理解嗎？Hollow leg英文釋義是to have a great capacity or need for food or drink. 是指人食量大或者酒量大，常用短語是have a hollow leg。
I don't know how he can eat so much. He must have a hollow leg.
我不知道他怎麼能吃下這麼多東西,他的胃口肯定大得像個無底洞。
The way Gary eats.. you would think he has a hollow leg.
看格雷的吃相， 你會以爲他怎麼吃都吃不飽。
現在我們能夠理解開頭整句話的意思了：Want to drink him under the table? Well…you can never do, He's got a hollow leg, you know. 你想灌醉他？你可實現不了，你知道他酒量可大得很。
