A foreign culture

Ok, well one of the foreign cultures I’m Most interested in at the moment is American culture, so that’s what I’ve decided to talk about.

And as for what I know about it, well if I’m gonna be totally honest with you, I really don’t know that much, mainly because I haven’t yet been to the States, so I’m no expert in any sense of the word, but one thing I think is fair to say is that Americans really love sports, especially basketball and baseball. And I’ve also heard that, apparently, universities in America offer a lot of sports scholarships, so I think this goes to show that being good at sport is pretty highly-regarded over there, and is a strong part of their culture.

So that’s one thing, and I think I’m also right in saying that rap and hip hop are very popular kinds of music in the States, because I’ve noticed that in a lot of Hollywood films I’ve watched, this type of music seems to appear quite a lot, although I have to admit that I find it really difficult to understand what exactly is being said or sung in the songs!

But anyway, with regard to why I find the American culture interesting, well firstly, I guess one reason would be that it’s completely different to our culture over here, and that’s kind of what makes it so appealing to know more about. I mean, just to give you one example, the way food’s cooked in America, on the whole, is a lot different to here, as over there they tend to use an oven for most of their cooking, whereas here in China, we tend to fry most of our food. And as well as this, I think another thing that makes the American culture interesting is the fact that it encompasses so many things that I wasn’t aware of before, so learning about it has really broadened my mind.

And this, I would say, is the beauty of learning other cultures, because for me at least, making an effort to understand a little bit about U.S. culture has definitely given me a wider perspective on life.

So yeah, that’s pretty much all I’ve got to say, so thanks for listening.

Culture

What is 'culture' for you?

考生?: Culture can be defined as the way of life of a particular society or section of society. It involves their customs and traditions, and so in some senses culture is what distinguishes us from others, what makes us unique. I think culture is also what connects us to our past,

to our heritage. We mustn't forget modern culture either, though. Youth culture is often very vibrant and powerful, with its new and inventive forms of music, dress and art.

be defined as 被定義爲

in some senses 在一定意義上

distinguish 區分

connect someone to 把...

Do you think that it is important for a society or culture to have a sense of continuity with the past?

考生?: Yes, definitely. Change is necessary, but it is also frightening. For this reason, people continue to rely on their traditions to give them a sense of their roots and to remind them of where they've come from. Commemorating the past is also a way of bringing people closer together, such as during National Day.

rely on 依賴

a sense of their roots

remind someone of ...

commemorate the past 紀念過去

A Cultural Event in China”

Chinese New Year, Dragon-boat Festival, Mid-Autumn Day, Tomb-sweeping Festival等等。

We usually have a good time during the festival. The whole family members have a delicious dinner, and friends and relatives come together to have fun. Parents usually give money to children, so they can buy many things they want. On that day, we usually eat moon cakes and watch the round moon in the sky. It is very beautiful, and the story behind it is more beautiful.

The Chinese are very superstitious and that means they take symbolism seriously. Locals come to market to buy good luck charms. Customers at snack are scooping up all sorts of New Year's treats.

It's a tradition for all of us Chinese to get these sesame balls during Chinese New Year. We use them to worship our ancestors and we say if we have more sesame balls at home then more gold and silver will come into our house. It's really to bring us more wealth in the New Year. Roasted melon seeds symbolize coins, so this means scooping up lots of money. Rice cakes in the shape of fish are big sellers too. In Cantonese the word for fish sounds the same as the word for savings.

Another item that locals want to buy for the New Year for good luck is red underwear. Red symbolizes wealth and prosperity and the Chinese want new clothes for the New Year from head to toe and underneath. My aunt buys three lingerie sets every New Year, believing red will bring her good luck. Lunar New Year is the most profitable time of year for this lingerie store.

The banks are also very busy with customers ordering brand-new bills to give away as New Year's gifts to younger relatives or junior colleagues. It's considered good luck for the giver and recipient.

除了描述春節之外,其實還有很多其他的cultural event值得一說,相對大衆的文化傳統節日如中國傳統的“鬼節”the Ghost Festival,重陽節the Double Ninth Festival;具有地方特色的文化活動可以選擇“成都的麻將節the Mahjong Festival,重慶的火鍋節the Hotpot Festival in Chongqing”等。

The seventh lunar month in the traditional Chinese calendar is called Ghost Month. On the first day of the month, the Gates of Hell are open to allow ghosts and spirits access to the world of the living. The spirits spend the month visiting their families, feasting and looking for victims.

There are three important days during Ghost Month. On the first day of the month, ancestors are honored with offerings of food, incense, and ghost money - paper money which is burned so the spirits can use it. These offerings are done at makeshift altars set up on sidewalks outside the house.

Almost as important as honoring ancestors, offerings to ghosts without families must be made, so that they will not cause you any harm. Ghost month is the most dangerous time of the year, and malevolent spirits are on the look out to capture souls. This makes ghost month a bad time to do activities such as evening walk, traveling, moving house, or starting a new business. Many people avoid swimming during ghost month, since there are many spirits in the water which can try to drown you.

The last day of the month is when the Gates of Hell are closed up again. The chants of Taoist priests inform the spirits that it’s time to return, and as they are confined once again to the underworld.

針對這樣的話題,若希望增加其自然度和真實感,可以在回答正題之前先給考官打一個預防針:“The cultural event I’m going to talk about may sound a little bit superstitious and scary, but it is one of our traditional and cultural events in most areas.”

Describe an occasion that you had a special cake

You should say:

when you had it

where you had it

who you were with

and explain why you think it was special

Band 6

A couple of months ago, my cousin called and told me that she got engaged (訂婚). I can’t tell you how excited and thrilled I was hearing the good news So in order to celebrate this memorable(值得紀念的) occasion, I decided to give her a special cake as a present.

Now, I’d like to talk bout the appearance. The cake had two layers (雙層) and it looked silky smooth (絲滑的), with some chocolate frosting (巧克力糖霜) and some candy sprinkles (糖果碎) on the outside. What’s best about it is that (主語從句) it’s got two little figures on top of it that looked exactly like my cousin and her fiance (未婚夫), which looked super cool! The bride and the groom were so delighted. After they cut the cake, I couldn’t help myself and took a bite. Words can’t describe how (語言無法描述多麼的...) savory is was! I’m not exaggerating (毫不誇張地說), it tasted so different from any other cake I’d ever had before, so soft and tender (柔軟的).

As for why it’s special, well, first and foremost, it’s undoubtedly the most special cake I’ve ever had. Plus, it has sentimental values (情感價值) that cannot be replaced and we all enjoyed it very much.

Band 7

A couple of months ago, my cousin called and told me that she got engaged. I can’t tell you how excited and thrilled I was since mycousin and I are like sisters and she knows me likea book So in order to celebrate this memorable occasion, I decided to give her something special, which is afondant cake

When the wedding day finally came, I saw the cake for thefirst time and I was totally blown away It was an 8-inch two-layer cake with a silky smooth finish, decorated with (非謂語) chocolate frosting and some candy sprinkles. The biggest highlight is that (最大的亮點是…) it’s got two little figures on top of it that looked exactly like my cousin and her fiance, which looked super cool! The bride and the groom were overjoyed (開心的, 替換happy) withan ear-to-ear smile (咧開嘴的笑容) on their faces. After they cut the cake, Icouldn’t resist the temptation (無法抗拒誘惑) and took a bite. The second it touched my tongue (當觸碰到我的舌尖時,時間狀語), I was utterly out of words (無法用語言表達的震驚)! It tasted so soft and tender and it gave me a whole new sensation (一種全新的感受) that I had never had before.

As for why it’s special, well, not only (倒裝) is it the most palatable (美味的,替換deilicious) cake I’ve ever had, but also it has sentimental values that cannot be replaced.
