短語中的dump和意爲“垃圾堆”的dump是同源迥異的同音同形異形詞。它可能源自荷 蘭語dmnp(薄霧)或德語dumpf(陰暗的,沉悶的），在伊麗莎白時代（1558-1603)指“哀樂”或“悲歌”。在莎士比亞1593年所寫的喜劇《馴悍記》（The Taming ofthe Shrew)第二幕第一場中悍婦Katherine和求婚紳士Pertrucuo舌戰一場後:，她父:親問她說： "Why，how now ,daughterKatherine ! In your dumps? ”（啊,怎麼,凱瑟琳，我的女兒！你怎麼不大髙興?）
