環保部（the Ministry of Environmental Protection）的實時空氣監測（Real-time air monitoring）數據顯示，週三，中國處於監控狀態下（under surveillance）的338座城市中，超過60%的城市有空氣污染。

包括北京在內將近25%的城市有重度霧霾（heavy smog），空氣質量指數（AQI，Air Quality Index）在201到300之間。世界衛生組織（World Health Organization）稱空氣污染對全球人類依然是個很大的威脅。每年約有200萬例過早死亡（premature deaths）均可歸因於（be attributed to）空氣污染。

中國人民大學（Renmin University of China）醫改研究中心（healthcare reform center）主任王虎峯認爲中國缺乏監管（lacks surveillance），越來越多的地區以研究和證據爲基礎來評估霧霾對健康的影響。

他說“我國應對空氣污染——尤其是顆粒物（particulate matter），將會是一場艱難的持久戰，我們應該監測潛在的與空氣污染相關的健康問題，並持續進行科學研究。”
